Porridge also known as oatmeal and is a good source of complex carbohydrates. Full of natural goodness that is not found in processed cereals, and is said to lower cholesterol and reduce constipation.

The Scottish like their porridge on the runny side.

Traditional Oatmeal Recipes


Cranachan - V

100g (4oz) Scottish Oatmeal
500ml (1 pint) Whipping Cream
250g (8oz) Raspberries
Caster Sugar to taste
1 tblsp Whisky (optional)

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F, Gas 4)

Toast oatmeal in oven for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned. Whip cream and sugar until stiff (add whisky if using). Place in layers in individual glasses, starting with the fruit and finishing with cream. Decorate with fruit. Chill and serve.

Recipe: Hamlyns of Scotland


Steamed Skirlie (Oatmeal Stuffing) - M, V

200g (8oz) Scottish Oatmeal
125g (4oz) Suet (or Veg Suet or oil)
1 Large Onion, finely chopped
2-3 tbsp Milk
Salt and Pepper

Mix oatmeal and suet and season. Combine with chopped onion and milk. Place in a 1 pint pudding basin, cover and steam for 1 hour.

no it is not from fairytales...you are talking about rolled oats of which i grew up on..however , today you can get many different flavors and all you do is add hot water..it`s very tasty and easy to do...i like to add a little milk...flavors are maple and brown sugar, peach,banana..etc. the bonus is it is not too expensive.it is put out by Quaker Oats. any grocery store should have it

It's just another word for oatmeal, pretty much. It's quite good if cooked right. Flavors help too. Although most flavors are sugar based, so that takes away from the nutritional value.

Porridge is just cooked cereal, like cream of wheat, or oatmeal.

Porridge is really, really cheap food. Poor people through history have eaten lots of porridge. It's peasant food.
