Sometimes your body "doing its thing" as the first ho said that posted here, may actually be called a "panic attack". You are finding yourself in an uncomfortable and hazardous position. You don't like the position and your having trouble improving your position technically because you don't know how to. Sounds like you are actually pannicking in that position, but with knowledge and practice, you will be able to keep your composure, and fight out of that position. Why don't you try rotating your head.

This is similar to wrist locks or pins in Aikido. (Doesn't matter the style, the same idea is essentially true)

The point is for the person doing the technique to learn what actually works and how that feels vs. what doesn't work and how that feels. If you don't tap when you reach your limit, your partner can't learn the difference and might hurt you in the process.

For you, the point is to learn your own limits. If you don't actually go beyond them from time to time you'll never know if you actually reached them and what it feels like when you do.

This is how the physical aspect of training manifests. Sometimes its not enjoyable, sometimes its not fun..... Then again, the more you train, the more you expand your limits and what was once painful or frightening becomes fun. This is you maintaining calm when in danger which is important - its another purpose of training.

How do you get used to it? Just keep doing it. Tap out when you need to, but not before you really need to. Kung-Fu, literally translated means 'hard work'. The last two tests I took made me puke. Do I like vomiting? Of course not, but vomiting pushes me to really work with Aikido rather than just my body - that's where the real learning is - that's when the art really shows itself by 'doing' the person rather than the person 'doing' the art.

There is no mind over matter if matter isn't testing your mind to begin with. It may not be easy or pleasurable, but nothing worth it comes easy does it?

Well from what your saying it sounds like a "reflex" kicking in. A self fulfilling prophecy if you will. When they get their gi on your face, you "think" that you're not going to be able to breath, therefore you panic, and start to breath harder, which means more air needed. When you can't get it you start to panic. Which means breathing harder, etc...

Try some breathing exercises, learn to control your breath instead of your breath controlling you. You could start by doing a strenuous workout and when your done force yourself to breath only through your nose. Count it off.. breath in 2,3,4... out,2,3,4.. Hopefully that will start to teach you how to "not" go into overdrive mode with your breathing.

Very rarely will you be so covered up that you can't get any air. Just relax and breath through your nose.. if you look, it's designed to intake air from the bottom, not the front. Even if you smash it into a pillow, it still works.. you may have to breath deeper and work a little harder to suck in air, but you can. Also learn to breath through the corners of your mouth. Keep your lips closed and suck in air through the sides. If you need help with that find a band geek. Almost all of them can do this.

The main idea here is to not spaz, relax, and breath. Air is always available (unless there's a plastic bag over your head), just sometimes takes more work.

No, they are trapping out part of you air supply, thats gonna happen you body is trying to collect the air it needs if you try not to breath as hard you could make your self pass out, just let you body do it's thing, it usually knows what its doing.
