I had a misdemeanor charge from 1997-1998,but thought It was cleared, now my recruiter saidi he got a call from MEPS, stating that it was not cleared up completely, that I still had some community service hours, I had to complete. My recruiters are trying to see what they can do. Could I be discharched from joining the Navy, now? ....................... (original charge:Theft Under $300)

As a former recruiter, no. You can't be discharged because you are not actually in the Navy until you complete bootcamp. As for the charge, just do the community service or get an attorney to have a judge let you off since your jojning the military. They typically will. You can then sign a waiver and go to bootcamp, no problem. If the Navy gives you a hassle you can still switch services since you have yet to actually leave. Don't worry.

Hey they need more people in the Army or the Marines, so it sounds to me that the recruiter could make a deal and get you cleared for the Marines instead of the Navy.

You can be discharged at any time. For just about any reason - "the needs of the Navy".

They will probably not discharge you for this, they are desperate for recruits, they just won't let you do anything like the nuclear program or SEALs, because you have to pass background for Top Secret level security clearance & your conviction will probably preclude that from happening.

Good Luck.

I am sure the navy will be willing to work with you so that you can get your legal matters squared away. A plus that you have going for you is that the military is really wanting people right now, so they may be more willing to help you. Good luck, and thank you for your desire to serve our country.

probably...depends on what the court says...if you knew you were supposed to do community service and didn't, then it's a parole violation, in terms of your release. Theft is theft....you broke the law and now the Navy has reminded the law you didn't do your community service...I'd be looking for the cops to come with a warrant.

Hopefully this csn all be rectified. See if you can pay for the rest of the charge instead of doing th community work hours. This happened to a close friend of mine and it was all cleared.
I hope it works out good for you..good luck

More then likely not. Since you were Honorable enough to join up, they will think this is going to be punishment enough, and that it will lead you down a better road. Hang in there, and God Bless you.

You can always be discharged. If you want to stay in, go with your recruiters' advice. They're job is to get you in.
