People can be sorta uptight and "religious" about stuff like that. Nothing wrong with wearing suits and dresses, it's nice to dress up sometimes. I attend a fairly laid-back church, I see more people in jeans than in suits. My pastor addressed this issue one time and preached in shorts and flip flops to make his point! You should always look decent, but God doesn't love you more if you dress up.

Dressing up for church comes from feudal times and was at its height in the Victorian era. Many believe they should come to Church in their "Sunday Best" to show respect to God. In this regard I lean that way, but only in the regards that you should wear YOUR best, not adhering to a standard. If your best is a vomit stained Tye dyed tee shirt sandals and a grungier pair of cargo shorts that is fine. "Come all ye who are heavy laden and I will give you rest." If you find that Church looks down on you flee them and find one that knows the truth. The book of James addresses this topic.
Now, as for Jesus "the hippie," that is not the case. Radical perhaps but the true "hippie" might have been John the Baptist not Jesus. He had little in the way of material possessions, but to say more than that is to equate him with "man's" ways and he was far above that and pure in spirit.
Now, hippies may draw some from Jesus, but Jesus never drew from anyone save the Father.

In the time of Jesus those clothes were not considered to be hippy.
If someone invites me to a birthday party I will dress up. If I am invited to a wedding I will dress up. Church service on Sunday morning is a celebration. I like to dress up a bit.
I now rarely wear a tie in church, that is no longer necessary to be considered as "dressed up".
I wouldn't be surprised if Jesus, when possible, went through all the purificaiton rites and dressed neatly and cleanly before attending synagogue - I can't prove that though.

Jesus would have shown respect for Gods temple arrangement and dressed accordingly.
He give us an example of this when he talks about the man sneaking into a marriage feast and was not dressed accordingly.
It makes no sense that Jesus would show disrespect for God's temple and show respect for a marriage.

Christians believe that Church is the house of God and Mass is like an invitation for dinner. Dressing up is for showing respect for the host.

We give GOD our best at all times and because we are the temple of the Holy Spirit we dress the part.
Jesus was robed in an extremely expensive seamless gown. He was not a hippie.
The times were that man dressed for the weather and climate which was a robe and slippers or shoes.

People dress up for church because they are trying to give God their best. Would you appreciate your kids showing up for a thaknksgiving meal in rags? Yes youd b happy they were there but if they came dressed like slobs on purpose or just because they were lazy?

People dress up for church for the same reason they get together and dress up for dinners, weddings, funerals, family gatherings, and other such events. It's just part of our cutlure to do so. In cultures that aren't so particular on wardrobes, they don't necessarily dress up for religoius services.

Some churches are fashion shows, like John Hagee's Cornerstone. Others are sincerely good places to just love God.

when they dress up for church they are showing respect for their religion and Jesus wore what was appropiate for his era. I think ppl should dress as best they can, If they are poor what ever that person has is fine.
