Even very pricey steak can be different in quality. Some will be tough and the best one will be so tender you can simply tear it with fork and not to cut it.
On the grill, it depends on the quality of the steak you put on, therefore, the time can be all different.
Use visual inspection and check the center for doneness by poking small holes.
Usually, if you get it on the raw side, steak matters less. Agree?

It can depend on whether you have a charcoal or gas grill, the cut of meat (rib-eye, NY strip, etc.), the doneness you want, the outside temperature and things like that.
To deal with all of these factors we use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. Just enter the info for the items you will be grilling and it calculates the grilling times and gives you instructions for how to grill steaks. It also works for boneless chicken breasts and pork chops and has grilling tips.

Let the grill heat on medium high for about minutes and then...9 minutes on each side should be perfect...If you like it really well done add three minutes to each side. Also, rub the steak deep with Lawry's and baste with BBQ sauce if you want added flavor.

Make a tight fist. Press on the area between your thumb and finger. That is well done. Your meat will feel the same.
Loosen your fist a little. Press and feel how medium well feels.
A very loose fist is rare.
Chef's use this method not time to judge the steak.

Until it is cooked to your liking. If it's brown on the outside and the temp has reached over 350 for 5 mins, you should be a-ok.
I would just cut the middle to see the desired pinkness before taking it off the grill.
It's not nearly as complicated as you might think.

Depends on how hot the fire is and how you want the stead done. You should check it by temperature. For a well done steak the center will be 160 degrees.
