Usually you would call the police because it may very well be a stolen and dumped car. If it is not then it may go to the pound. Depending on where you live, you may put your name as the person who noted it and in 3 months time, after the notification time, it would be yours to keep.
If it was involved in crime, you wouldnt want to be driving it and get pulled up by the cops ya know.

If it's been abandoned on your property your state may have a procedure to notify the owner by roistered mail and unless they remove it, get a title in your name. Check the law. It you have seen it parked at the train station for 3 months and hasn't moved, no, you can't.

Nope. Even if it's on your property, you have to make a diligent and concerted effort to locate the owner and get him to offer to sell it to you. There's registration difficulties, title-ship and several other things to consider. What would you do if it is a stolen car that somebody dumped in your driveway or in your pasture/backyard/wherever? If you fixed it up and tried to register it and it showed up on a "hot" list, you'd be out of luck, money and the burden of proof that you didn't steal it in the first place would be entirely up to you.
If it is an eyesore (junker or being stripped) and it's on public property (street or lot) you should alert the authorities to its presence. They may impound it and auction it; at least that way you could get title to it.

i own a repair shop, and it doesn't mean you can keep it,you,l have to get some kind of legal paper made up that gives you ownership of it in case the original owner comes back for it,and decides they want it back, you can call your local police station and find out what the laws are on this ,they,ll l know what they are, good luck i hope this helps,s.

Check with your local police department. The VIN number or car may be reported stolen and something worst. Ask them to verify that it is not wanted first.

I believe you have to check with the police to see if it has been stated as abandoned.

Ya if you don't have a title you are pretty much not able to do anything with it other than part it out. Most junkyards won't even take a care unless you give them the title.
