My hair was dark also and I wanted to go lighter. I went to a colorist and told her to just dye it. She told me that when your hair is that dark you have to get highlights and it is a process that goes until you get it to the color and thickness you want. Her highlights were so thick that I thought that was her color. I had my first highlight and am due for the next, so I am going a little thicker with mine. Hope this helps.

Do not try sun-in. Do not dye it yourself. For those of us with really dark hair, blonde should only be done by a professional. They know how to do it so you don't get that awful greenish tint to it.

ya so you should get it professionally dyed light dirty blonde with a little light brown. But your hair should not just get highlights!!! this is because it your har had highlights it would have blonde, black, brown. red in it and that would look weird so dye the whole thing!

it's more difficult than just buying a box of color...
since the base of your hair is dark, you are going to have to bleach it to remove the dark color. otherwise, the blonde lightening will have no effect on your hair.
i suggest going to a professional. i've screwed my hair up a few times, and it pays in the long run to have someone do it for you!
