It's a lot more complex than a single cause.

A lot of historians are now considering WWII to be simply a second phase of the 'Great War' that began with WWI.

There were issues of economics (an on-going global depression), national pride (The Germans were humiliated by the terms of the Treaty of Versailles), war-fears (The French could have stopped German expansion back into the Rhur with a single platoon of men - But did not), appeasement (The Brits and others split Czechelslovakia at Munich and gave huge hunks of territory as well as the Krupp Arms factories to the Germans), Isolationism (The US wanted nothing to do with those warlike Europeans - We didn't declare war on Germany until after we declared on Japan and then Germany declared on us), and Politics - Facism vs Communism (thank goodness!). In the Pacific the US was strangling the Japanese Empire economically, they were expanding militarily and bumping up against the Brits, Dutch, and Chinese.

So what should we say is THE cause of WWII? I'll say leftover territorial disputes and longings from WWI, vengance, pride, politics, money, fear, and national exhaustion. Sorry, that's longer than one. :-D

A lot of the same things that are driving the current Long War when you look at it. Radical Islam wants 'their' territory back (Andalusia), wants 'their' power back (the Global Caliphate), they feel humiliated by Arab failures across the board, the Western World needs oil, and so on...Note that a lot of leftovers from WWI and II are still hitting here too - the creation of Israel in 1948, the loss of Turkish influence and power, and so on.

Hope this helps.

The cause of WWII was that Germany (under Hitler) had broken the Versailles treaty, and was building up Germany's capabilities. He then invades Poland, in direct violation of the Versailles treaty. If you want to find out more, go to Wikipedia, type in Versailles Treaty.

Hitler rose to the top of the Nazi party, took total power over the government, and invaded Poland. Europe had already stood by when he annexed the Sudetenland, and squeezed into Czechoslovakia.... Poland was the last straw.... The U.S. got involved after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia (new democracy)

that made the UN and the Allies start to wonder if they let Hitler go too far...

The real answer to your question is

when Hitler viscously invaded Denmark.

Denmark had an agreement of protection after the first world war in which it agreed that if Denmark was ever attacked.. England would immediately, and uncircumstancially come to its aid.

England was America's #1 ally then, but because of the presidents belief in isolationism.. we only provided limitted, however sumwhat significant, aid to the Allied Forces.

Years later, Allied intelligence intercepted a letter comming from Germany in which it asked the Mexican president to join the Axis powers in return for compensations...
In the letter, Germany asked Mexico to help attack the USA... it aimed to take out the only remaining super-power in Hitlers way, the United States of America.

That was when America said screw isolationism and fought to protect its security from Nazi Germany.

Germany also violated many UN resolutions by sinking hundreds of harmless military + civilian cruise ships. Killing thousands of innocent people.
We got sick of that too.

The military buildup of Japan and Germany. Then the advancement of them both to conquer the country's around them and any country that contridicted there movement. Germany blowing up passenger ships and American cargo ships is what first lured us into the war. Japan's advancement towards American's interst in allie country's lured us against them and the bombing of Pearl Harbour was "the last straw". Hitler's first move into Poland, then Italy and the other smaller country's is what got it all started.

kind of complicated, but if your talkin about how the US got involved its because they put an embargo on the fuel going to japan, after Japan's ruthless attacks in China, and then the Japs got pissed off that the US cut off their oil, so they attacked Pearl Harbor. At this point the Japanese had gotten into trouble by makin too many treaties with everyone that they couldnt uphold. So the US declared War after Pearl Harbor and then that is basically how it got underway.

The Second World War was caused by Fascist aggression and the failure of democratic powers to stop this aggression.

1. The rearmament of Germany was a cause for war because it broke the Treaty of Versailles (28th June, 1919)
2. The remilitarization of the Rhineland (7th march, 1936) was a cause of war because it broke the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pacts (1925)
3. The Rome-Berlin Axis (October 1936) was a cause of war because it united the aggressive fascist powers and divided Europe into hostile camps.
4. Chamberlain’s appeasement policy (after may 1937 – March 1939) was a cause of war because it broke the Treaty of Versailles and Treaty of St. Germain (10th September, 1919)
5. The Anschluss of Germany with Austria (13th march, 1938) was a cause of war because it broke the Treaty of Versailles and Treaty of St. Germain (10th September, 1919)
6. The Nazi annexation of the Sudetenland after the Munich conference (29th September 1938) was a cause of war, because it broke the Treaty of St. Germain.
7. The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, cause war because it defied the Munich agreement and ended Britain’s appeasement policy.
8. The Nazi-Soviet Pact (29th August 1939) caused war because it sealed Poland’s downfall.
9. The Nazi invasion of Poland (1st September 1939) caused war because Britain had guaranteed Poland’s borders.

Enjoy!
