Depression and mental illnesses are usually treated with medicines. However these meds only treat and diminish the symptoms they do not cure. Once you are off meds you get your symptoms back. Most mental illnesses are caused by an unbalance of brain neurotrasmiters (cientific explanation). The spiritual explanation is that the person has a spirit attached that makes them feel depressed, sad, lack of concentration or makes them hear voices, etc. Since cientific and medicine have not found a cure to these illnesses, should we do the spiritual approach. (find witches to release these spirits) if not, what is the cure for depression and mental illnesses. Argentox2@yahoo.com

Depression is frequently a chemical imbalance.

Have your Thyroid tested and your hormone balance checked.

In my case I went into surgical menopause quite young. Without hormones daily, I become depressed and paranoid. So after nearly 30 years I still cannot taper off.

After being depressed for 7 years from 3 deaths in the family. I finally had my Thyroid tested and learned I have hypothyroidism.

It causes depression, low temperature, cold hands and feet, eyebrows thin out. There is a simple blood test to determine if this could be a factor in your depression.

Mine was diagnosed and after one month on Synthroid my life was back to normal. I felt well, went back to work and actually felt some happiness again.

Please go and be tested. A chance to be better is worth it.

Another thing I do is take an A to Z program daily of vitamin supplements. At least take a Good Quality Multiple Vitamin morning and night to help cover any missing vitamins or minerals in your diet.

Within three weeks of starting this I was feeling more energetic.
It has been worth it.

Good Luck.

First, please let me say that to criticize your spelling is a bit shabby. (First answer.) I don't agree with the premise that "most" are caused by an imbalance in the brain. There are a myriad of causes of depression~mental illness would be in a rather different category. There are also many ways to "treat" depression other then meds. I'm having a difficult time here since the definitions are actually separate. Also, scientific vs spiritual allows no "wiggle" room for much that truly can be accomplished. I won't bash anyone who believes in spirits, but have yet to hear of a solution by getting rid of them! As to the last part, there ARE "cures" depending on the individual condition, & the individual. Your question seems to have "locked" you in a box, when the issues are far more complex than you'd imagine.

Edit: "Leaving it up to god to heal" is a beautiful ideology, but the person must take responsibility, & not "lean" on anyone, definitely not the psychologist, (if they choose to see one), & work toward the root of the problem. There is no finite time that one can say it will be solved, but I've seen it happen in as few as a dozen sessions. At other times, years. Those who suffer depression aren't "led" by ANYONE, just assisted in asking questions of themselves which is the only place answers can be found.

This is a debate that will always be had. Depression and mental illness most of the time is genetic!! If it runs in the family, it's not that you are a bad person or not a believer, but that it's hereitary. I am a very spiritual person, and trust God immensely. I have depression and my daughter has both of what you are asking. She is also spiritual, but right now, she is in a facuility to help her deal with the mental illness. You approach it from BOTH angles. The medication can help you focus and get the help you need. God will work in your life, if you allow him too, and eventually you may decrease or come off of medicine completely. If you speak healing into your life, things will turn around. I look at my medicine as a means to cope. I got so depressed, I was becoming a hermit, and I didn't like it. I know that God can and will heal me, in HIS time. First, you have to put in your spirit what it is that you want. You leave it up to God to heal. Taking medication is not bad, there is a bio-chemical place that is expensive but they also deal with the body chemicals and cure. It's called the Pfiefer Center. You need to get pre-approved, but this may be what you are looking for. Find a good church and truly believe in God, I've come off of some meds by Faith and taking better care of myself.

Watch Fight Club. "We're born in a time where there's no great war, no great depression. Our war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives."
It's human spirit versus comfort in the hands of corporate society.
Make your pick. There are other people like you. They're not all perfect conformist robots....
