I have an 80 acre ranch that I just bought. The only phone that has ever been here is at an old homestead about 1500 feet from my house. I have had the phone company here and cannot have another phone run until the weather clears and the big trucks can get in. I tried to get them to hook up something temporary, against regulations. They said we could do it ourselves, but were no help with details. Will I lose clarity if I run a regular phone line? What are other options? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can hook up your phone line yourself but, don't use just
regular station (phone) wire like the kind that you would get from
Radio Shack. You would probably ( in 1500 ft.) get considerable
signal degradation. I suggest that you call an electrical wire or
cable dealer and try to locate some direct burial ( tray ) cable. If
you are running just 1 line then you only need two conductors and
they need to be at least 20 guage and stranded. Your verbage to
the the dealer would be; 2 conductor, 20 guage, stranded tray
cable.

You have several options. First, buy about a high quality phone cable and run it between the buildings. Get at least 50-100 feet more than the distance between the houses so that you have extra to run inside. Make sure you get one length of cable and that will help prevent degradation of signal.

Second option is to get a 5.8 GHz cordless phone with a spare handset charger. Put the base in the old homestead and use the handset in your house. The signal should carry that far.

Third option is to call an electrician. They often know how to run phone lines as well, and they may be willing to do the work despite the weather.

Buy a virgin phone until the regular company can come in and give you what you need. They are about $50.00 then you can set up on pay as you go or have payment out of your account every month. This site is for Canada, but they have site for around the world. I have had my little phone for 2 years, and its very good. It has a very good policy for help, and if you have a problem, then just get hold of them. This is the telephone they used in the movie 'Cell Phone'
