When I see people in the grocery store wearing their pajamas, I just think that they are lazy and dirty...and it's not just the pajamas, it's also their bedroom slippers. When exactly did this become fashionable and why?

If you can afford to buy pajamas, you can afford to buy street clothes so I don't see what being poor has to do with anything. When I see these people, I look at them like they wore that to bed, and continued to wear them until the middle of the afternoon, and that's why it signifies lazy and dirty. As far as it being some sort of ghetto fashion statement, then these people should stay in the ghetto where it's unfortunately acceptable.

It has never been appropriate for people to wear their pajamas in public. I don't care if you are a college student, a parent, whatever, you can put on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt before leaving the house. I recently attended a formal concert where almost everyone was dressed up in suits and dresses, and there were a group of women in their pajamas. There is a time and place for pajamas and that is in your own house.

It depends on what you consider pj's. I'm personally a fan of sweatpants and matching zip up hoodie look. The kind you actually buy in the store. I also think it's acceptable to wear gym type sweatpants/workout gear outside of the gym. As long as it's clean and neat.
Anything that's patterned or ratty needs to stay at home. Personally, I think it's OK to wear nice sweat pants and a t-shirt out to the store or shopping. Sometimes you just want to be casual. Also, when I was loosing weight I wore a lot of sweatsuit/tracksuits because they were comfortable and unlike jeans, I didn't need to buy a new pair of pants for every so many pounds I lost. Sweatpants/trackpants are very forgiving to the figure if you are loosing weight.
Slippers are just a no-no.

Hey I do this but I don't call them pajamas. I wear a clean Shirt and a pair of lounge pants.
I work hard and want to relax as soon as I get home, I am not lazy nor dirty. I don't really care what people think of me when I am out buying toilet paper. I do draw the line at the slippers though.

Younger girls think it's cute *up to mid 20s, i guess* and then the older women that do it want to look like the younger ones. I sometimes where my PJ pants out in public, but most of them were bought as sweatpants and eventually made their way into my PJ drawer.
I'm not sure why you'd think it's "dirty". Lazy for sure, I mean, how hard is it to throw on some jeans? I mean, if they look clean otherwise, why do clean pajamas make you think "dirty?"
And pajamas in public are only fasionable if you consider Wal-Mart in the same leage as Parris France. Then again, at Wal-Mart, pajama pants are the least of the fasion don'ts. Fat women in spandex shorts is far worse, preceeded by the odd couple that shows up in full on formal wear.

Never has been. It becomes more common in the mid to late thirties when people are more concerned about getting their fix of Ben and Jerry's rather than their physical appearance. The bedroom slippers are considered a fashion emergency and I highly discourage wearing them outside of the home. Dirty and lazy may be part of it. Or they are like me (professionals) and wear a suit or business attire and say "f" it because they are always dressed for success. Younger people are another sad story. Most have not figured themselves out and may think it is cool. If it is a quick trip to a local superstore who gives a $hit, if it is a quick business meeting it is another story.

Where are you from? What century did you come from?Do you come from a primitive culture? This is the 21 century,no one cares if it's appropriate or not.If you must know, wearing pajamas became popular in 2001 in New York.New Yorkers are very fashion cautious/and very sophisticated when it comes to clothes. But many of them could care less of what other people think, and continue to wear what ever they want,no matter what it is.Other people have visited New York and saw the style and then went back to they're native down and started rockin(sporting) the pajama style in public. It does not mean that people are lazy. The pajama pants that you see most people wear in public, was specially made to wear in public with a nice white shirt rockin addidas, nike, nautica, and other shoes. Most of the people that do that are Puerto Ricans, black Americans, some white Americans like the Italians, and the Irish Americans and some Guyanese immigrants people upstate. Now if your talking about a different king of PJ's that people wear with they're slippers, each time you go to the grocery store, then I guess those people have serious problems, because those PJ's that you see people wear in public
is different from the PJ's that I am talking about. The people that started the this fashion were minorities.(preferably blacks and Puerto Ricans in the south Bronx)You have to learn to open up,
and allow yourself to dress like others.Learn to enjoy life, and be comfortable. This isn't prep school, just as long as people aren't
walking aroung naked who cares?I know I don't and you shouldn't
either.Us minority folks started that fashion statement. Many of us are poor and can care less about what other people think. We are comfortable with the clothes that we wear.We are from the ghetto, and that is our style, and if others have a problem with it then f*ck you then,we are not out to impress anyone.

I think this is the tackiest thing people do anymore! In some cases I can understand. (I used to work in a pharmacy, and it's a pretty common occurrence there, but if you're sick and just need to grab your medicine, then I suppose I can understand.) But when I see people walking around in pajama pants it really drives me nuts! How hard is it to throw on a pair of jeans quickly?

What ever the reason.....or excuse to do so.....it just isn't cool. I really don't think they have declared it fashion statement yet. I have even seen high school kids wear them to school. Don't they care? And what about the teen that wears them shopping, or to the grocery store, or even when they go visiting. The ones that wear their pj's and bedroom slippers with the bunny ears in public may think it's cool....but they would really look cool in a pair of jeans, tennis shoes and sweat shirt.

People have been wearing pajamas in public at least since I've been in high school (so probably earlier than that). Of course it's slouchy, but they know that. I'm happy that they're at least wearing modest clothing.
