Thailand means the Land of the Free. Siam was a name given by foreigners until the Thai government officially name the country Thailand in 1939. Present capital is Bangkok.

It is only in fairly recent times that Siam or Thailand has been a unified country; previously what is now Thailand were seperate fiefdoms, kingdoms and vassel states.
The Burmese sacced the old capital of Ayathaya, and Kind Taksin moved the capital to Thon Buri when he was murdered by the founder of the present dynasty - over 200 years ago - the capital moved across the river to Bangkok. The name of the capital in Thai is Khrung Thep etc, etc, etc, but most people will know it as Bangkok.

siam is the former name of thailand meaning "land of the free" since they're one of the few countries in asia which never have been colonized by a foreign country. like the philippines, the former name of the philippines is islas de san lazarus during the middle ages until a spanish named ruy lopez de villalobos named it "felipinas" in honor of at that time prince ( later king phillip II) of spain.
