I visited this group because I thought it would be interesting and enjoyable to discuss this topic open-mindedly and amicability.

Unfortunately, there are so many rude, hate mongers posting, that I have no interest in being among your ranks.

Why can’t we discuss any subject without childish name-calling crudeness?

HI Steve,

Believe it or not there are some very insightful Q&As on here. Some express themselves in a civil manner with beautiful descriptions and explanations. Others show some immaturity and post for shock value or simply for a couple of points. Religious/spiritual concepts seems to be one of the most difficult things to discuss rationally because people tend to have such strong feelings. But you will find, if you stick around and shine your light, that there are many who have stepped above the emotional level and can look at concepts with an open mind and a willingness to share and understand ideas with others. Blessings :-)

If you want that kind of discussion, why not find a moderated mailing list or some other forum? Maybe where all the participants have to be 18 or older? It's not like this is the only place on the internet to discuss religion and spirituality.

In fact, strictly speaking, this isn't even a "discussion" forum; it's a "Q&A" forum. Which makes me wonder what your question is, aside from the obvious rhetorical one you ended your post with.

You are in a forum that is produced in the United States. You can purchase or create a forum to discuss such things, and to set the rules. In the United States we have free speech, which means that the owner of this forum is free to set the rules and thus, if allowed, we can speak anything we choose.

Thank goodness no one can prevent that, though the owner of a particular forum might deny us (their right, their soapbox), it is always possible for us to create our own soapbox.

At worst, we lose a few people who are NOT open-minded because they are too sensitive and cannot tune out the immature or narrow-minded, or interested in a forum where everyone agrees with them with only mild disagreement.

At the same time, Yahoo! Answers is made of it's members, and if the members are too timid to report abuse in the form of name-calling or inappropriate behavior, then we are better off without them.

I welcome them anyway, encourage EVERYONE to speak up, and would love it if you would stay and learn a little, take responsibility for your own speech while not insisting on us abiding by rules you have no reason to insist on, and make the effort to enforce Yahoo! Answers rules when you see them broken.

I've studied every major religion as well as a number of other belief systems. Amazing how many of them developed in the midst of name-calling crudeness.

Surely we have the fortitude to deal with a little more while hammering out the truth?

I'd be happy to have a discussion of the type you wish for any time you wish, but you might wish to consider one other factor.

You just insulted EVERYONE in this forum, indiscriminately, by judgine EVERYONE unworthy of your presence.

Are you that sure of your self-evaluation? I suggest you find a good friend to double-check.

Keep speaking up, everyone.

I come here to study other people and their views on God. I knew this would be a place to find good people with honest answers from all over the world. I've discovered so many understandings of how and why this human race can't get along anymore. I mean, not even with their close neighbors and families. I have grown spiritually here and I am becoming a stronger person. All of this, simply because I asked God to help me understand where I belong.

Steve,

Yes, there are many ignorant people here. Several atheists that STAY here specifically to ridicule Christians, bash God and hate Jesus Christ.

It's all part of it. I used to get angry, and lash out at them, but as the Bible teaches me more and more, I realize that I am bringing myself down to their level rather than lifting them up to a better level of understanding. If I act as they do, then I am no different than they are.

This would in effect lead them to feel that there is no life-changing difference when one starts to follow Jesus, which is simply not so.

So, just go with it, and you will learn how to spot the questions that are asked only to mock and scoff. You simply learn to ignore those, and answer the ones that seem sincere.

I agree with you whole heartedly. I joined the group for the same reasons. I relish in learning from individuals whose opinions and beliefs may differ than my own, but what I have found is that many individuals want to either proselytize or convict.

That will be the case wherever you go...I suggest trying to seek out those who are sincere and willing to discuss and taking the conversation outside of this "group."
