She gets a shower every week because she is a Pet Therapy Dog and works in the hospital. I try not to get water in her ear but maybe that could cause the tar like stuff. She shakes her head a lot. What can I use after a shower to dry out the ears?

Sounds like she has ear mites. Ear mites cause a tarry looking substance in their ears and it also causes an odor. She needs to be seen by your Vet to be sure she either does have them or it's something else.

The shaking of the head is pretty much a giveaway sign that she has ear mites or some other ear pest.

Either way, she needs some prescriptive medication and you need to ask your Vet to show you the correct way to clean her ears.

The tar or black looking dirt is evidence of ear mites. There are now ear medications that can be bought at many pet shops. It will take a couple of applications a few days apart. The instructions are clear. Before bathing some put a drop of olive oil in the ear to keep water out. Have a dog gone great year.

I have a Cavalier also and she tends to shake her head alot but when i tell vet he looks and says no mites but she doesn't have the black tar like stuff coming from them either- my other dog did though and it was ear mites- they sell ear mite stuff at wal-mart now so if you feel confident with the answers you got here then go buy some and see if that doen't clear it up.

You should go to the vet and explain what it is you see. They can take a sample of it and look at it under a mircoscope And they can get you some meds for it, if it needs meds, or maybe just some good ear cleaning.
Hope this Helps!

Dont wash her ears, wipe them out daily with cotton wool or tissues, always keep them dry. If she is shaking her head alot she might have ear mites, cause they like the dark moist warm place. You need ear drops for this.
