I don't take meds and I haven't seen a doctor to see if I should. I feel like I have to psych myself up to go places and see people. I dread going but once I get there and after a while I feel relaxed. Is this cause for alarm or is this normal? It sometimes causes strife between my spouse and I because more often than not the places we are going tend to be events for his side. Except for weddings. Those are okay. Maybe because it is less intimate? Thanks

Yes, I was like this before the move. We still live in an area where visiting his family is like 40 minutes away and I still have to psych myself. I feel ill when I find out we are going anywhere that is new to me or just visiting those places that aren't.

Sounds like you have some social anxiety. Medication is not always the answer. Mediction can help reduce some of the anxiety that you are feeling but then, you become dependent on the medication to make you calmer. Seeing a therapist will probably help you learn some techniques to help reduce the anxiety. It wll also help you understand and deal with what ever is causing your anxiety. Try some relaxation techniques.

I have included a link that will give you lots of information and techniques.

If you are having success in psyching yourself up without meds, I say keep doing what you are doing. The meds only help a small percentage of the people who take them, and they have lots of nasty side effects.
Your mind is much more powerful than any medicine that could be prescibed. Every time you psych yourself up and go to an event, you create a pattern in your brain. When you have a successful outcome, your positive thoughts reinforce the pattern. Soon the day will come when you have to go somewhere and you will feel nothing but positive feelings, as a result of the training you have given your brain. It is then that you will realize you have won the battle with anxiety.

There are medications that can help anxiety but if I were you I would try non-medical methods first. There are a variety of good books dealing with the subject that can give you pointers on how to deal and cope and reduce the effects of anxiety without drugs.
If these methods do not help after a month or so you might decide to try prescription meds. But ONLY prescription. And take them as directed and have regular re-evaluations. You do NOT need an addiction on top of everything else. Good luck and God bless.

I checked out your profile and found that you recently relocated. Maybe this is what's bothering you. Were you like this before the move? You can talk to a Dr. about it.There are several anti-anxiety meds that used in small doses just take the edge off a little. You may have a slight serotonin imbalance. Something like Paxil will balance you out without altering your personality.
Good luck!

No, you should see somebody but not for meds. Focus on the root of the problem rather than simply treating the symptoms. You need your partner to be aware and sensitive. You need support. It sounds like you are slowly overcoming your anxiety by going to the events and realizing it isn't so bad. You will get more comfortable with experience. Don't overreact by going for the meds.

I feel like that at times. I am taking NO meds and refuse to. I tell myself everyday that I have gotten through life this far, so I can get through the rest. Just tell yourself that " I am STRONG". I tell myself this when I feel this way. Good Luck! Also, self love will help you. You have to feel comfortable in your body and love yourself.

Yes it sounds like you have anxiety disorder. It is nothing to be ashamed of and there are plenty of meds out that your family doctor can prescribe for you, if he cant then he will refer you to a DR that can.

Best of luck

I suffer from this too, I have to force myself to go to some venues - I don't like crowds for a start. You can see a Doctor and get medication. Try relaxation and meditation, it works.

possibly its very good that you dont get increasingly anxious when you have been there for a while. You may be able to fix yourself since it seeps like you understand whats going on. Otherwise you may do well with a short (6 months or less) time on SSRI's like Paxil.
