I want to go to school, but right now i live on my own and pay all my own bills. the govt still counts me as a dependent though, and wants to combine mine and my parents income for the expected family contribution. Is there any way to get around this? I am not a dependent and there is no way I can make the contribution that they are expecting. Help?

There is a way you can be declared an independent for finacial aid purposes by the financial aid office at the college you are attending. I would suggest you contact the financial aid office at the school you are or are planning to attend.

Good Luck!!!

The only way to get around this when dealing with financial aid is to get emancipated. I know someone who did this and it saved their financial butt! They talked with their parents about it and their parents agreed it would be a good idea.

Another option is to get a bank loan or a sallie mae loan. They have higher interest rates and sometimes require a cosigner.

Other than that once you turn 23 you won't be a dependent anymore.

You can also try for scholarships. Fastweb.com is great for scholarships.

You might want to start with community college because it is cheaper. Community college is also a great education.

yes, you can petition for something called a "dependency override." You need to talk to your school for details, but basically you need to fill out a form and then write a detailed explanation about why you can't/shouldn't use your parent's info on the FAFSA. They will review this petition, and if approved, you will be declared an Independent student. This petition is reserved for people that were abused by their parents, people that have alcoholic parents, an unstable family, or some other extreme circumstance.

It is a pretty intensive process, but it can be done. I suggest you contact your financial aid office to get the details on how to do the petition.
