Are you asking why; and not what? Why? Mass times velocity verses resistance.

It takes Approx. 33 FT LBS of pressure to fracture a human skull.
between 16-196 LBS depending on where applied. and the degree of fracture
A .22 Long with 40 Grains has a max energy of 140 FT LBS at the muzzle. @ 1200 Feet Per Second
Most BB guns have a muzzle velocity of 200-400 FPS with between 3-4 FT LBS at maximum velocity.
A .22 Will definently do it. The blast over pressure from a .22 blank would provide adequate force to kill. Even though there is no projectile; the pressure from the blast would kill.
However with a BB gun youd be better off bludgening the source of your agression with the weapon itself.
All that said. The smalled caliber projectile I was able to find tht could be fired with enough velocity was a plinking airgun that fired an 8 gram .177 pellet at 1080 FPS with a 21 FT LBS force at the muzzle.
If you want to know more, I suggest reading up on Terminal Ballistics.

As far as I am aware the smallest cal pistol, aside from a BB gun and air pistol is the .22 cal, any weapon that propels its projectile faster than the speed of sound will be fatal at close range on the temple, when the bullet goes through the brain, it doesn't just move through the tissue, due to it rate of travel, it compresses the tissue as it pushes the tissue aside, the massive compression causes the individual cells in and around the bullet's path to rupture, this in turn causes massive trauma and blood loss, every nerve connection in the bullets path is utterly destroyed, nothing is left intact, its like hitting a watermelon with a sledge hammer.

The smallest caliber which can inflict the damaged at the range described: .177 (BB gun) or any firearm with a muzzle velocity of about 300 feet per second or greater. I own a .177 Crossman model 38T CO2 pistol. It has an average muzzle velocity of 450 feet per second. I have seen pellet rifles and pistols with muzzle velocities in 1,000 feet per second range (all .177 cal.) So it is not the caliber that does the damage, it is the transfer of kinetic energy.

.22, guaranteed. A .22 has always been the assassins choice for a close range weapon, because it has the power to enter the skull from a close range but not enough to exit it, meaning it will basically turn the targets brain into oatmeal, and they'll be dead within the week, normally the hour

the smallest caliber made is the .17 , and that can kill easily at point blank range. and a 22 is even bigger, i bet through out history you could find a lot of people killed with a 22, the.17 just came out in the last 2 or 3 years, so probably couldn't find out many kill cases about that round

A shot to the head by any handgun bullet to the head is not necessarily always fatal. Some of the times, it doesn't do any damage at all, other times, it turns the person into a vegetable without killing him, or leave him paralyzed. It all depends on where the bullet hits, and what damage it causes.

You don't even need a bullet - a .22 blank cartridge will punch a fatal hole in the skull when fired from a distance of an inch. Why, you in a hurry?

Looks like a .22 short bullet just doesn't have enough oomph behind it for anything else than target shooting, so I'd say probably.28 or .32 cal.
