Well the reason why the dog digs holes in the backyard is because it is getting bored, and is trying to find something to do.
Your backyard is probably not big enough for your dog to have fun and run free. In conclusion you should be walk in your dog more often and try to get him/her to know other dogs around your neighbourhood.

What you can do is put the dog's poop in the hole then cover it up. They will not dig where they think they have used the bathroom. You can also go to a petstore and buy something to stop it. But the first idea will work better and it is certainly cheaper.
Hope this helps.

Walk around your yard and where he is digging holes....Put some of his own poop in the hole. Dogs will not dig in their own feces.
It worked for me when my dog was digging under the fence.
Good luck!

Some dogs just love to dig. You have to discipline them when you catch them in the act.

My dogs were diggers... BIG TIME!!! I broke them of it by doing the "poop" thing and I also made a large place where there is no grass. They like laying in the dirt better than the grass... this seemed to do the trick.

that the dog gets very hot and thoses tips of dogs need to get cool down. so what i think is for you is to get the dog a baby pool. or some thing to cool the dog.

Cut his nails real short, he won't dig for a while, at least you'll have time to train him.

You can do the poop thing or get a dog run and cement the edges.
