I am interested in finding a 22 caliber rifle that looks just like (or close) to that of an AR-15 Rifle.

My Uncle used to let me use his when I was a kid. I'd kind of like to see if I could find out who makes them, so I can get one of my own.

I have heard that the AR-15 Rifle has a conversion kit. This kit would allow a person to use 22 caliber rounds for target practic.

If there is such a kit, how good is it and would it be safe to use so that it wouldn't mess up the AR-15 by using them.

Any website suggestions or comments on personal use would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike H.

The kit you're talking about is an upper receiver and a magazine well adapter to fit in a standard AR-15.

They cost around $400 and they actually look quite strange because it's a small stick hanging out of a rifle magazine well.

There is a ,22 rifle called the Armalite AR-1500, it looks similar to an AR/M16 but is chambered for .22lr.

Then there are many .22lr conversions for Ar-15s. These can either be drop in systems where you just change out the bolt carrier, or complete upper recievers. The complete uppers are safer and more reliable but cost damn near the price of a new rifle.

If you want a .223 (5.56 mm), then I would suggest you forget the AR-15/M-16 lookalikes. I prefer a Ruger Mini 14. It hardly ever jams (unlike both of the others), and if you know where to look, you can get 20, 30, 50 round clips and even drums, if that is your thing.

It also comes in a stainless version, which I like better than the blued steel, and since is it now off the list of "assult rifles" (when I bought mine it was a "varmit rifle", but oh well), hopefully it will be available.

I also, happen to like Ruger's quality, workmanship, and handling better.

I haven't seen one of those "looks like an m-16" .22LR rifles in years, and my guess is because they were crap. You can get .22LR kits or uppers for any AR-15 copy, and as someone pointed out already, there are dozens of companies making those. Any commercially available kit will be safe if you follow the instructions and use it properly.

Have fun and shoot safe.

For the kind of money your fixing to spend on a 22 you could get a damn nice ruger 10/22 customized with a stainless steel bull barrel, laminated stock and so forth, plus a truck load of ammo and better accuracy, you should really consider it.

Centerfiresystems.com $159.97. You would have a hard time finding an upper for less then the cost of this gun. You could also try CDNN, Sarco, Tapco, J&Gsales, Inter Ordnance, etc...If you have an AR15, you can go to 22lrconversions.com.

first step is to purchase an a-15. Then you can buy a new upper receiver chambered in .22LR or you can buy a new bolt/magazine to retrofit your .223 Rem. AR-15.
