The term bookie is a colloquialism for Bookmaker. A Bookmaker is a person or company who facilitates betting, usually on sporting events or horse racing.
A bookie gives certain odds, for example if this horse wins this race he pays 4-1. This means if you bet on that horse winning that race, you stand to get paid 4-1 on your money.
Being a bookie is only illegal if gambling is illegal where he or she is operating.

a bookie is someone who goes around to every bar and public place and gets nunmbers off of ppl that they want played then if they win they get payed more then the lotto pays u but a bookie dont work alone theres always someone higher then him the the head guy my uncle is one and he makes out pretty good cause ppl dont win that much i hope that helps u out
