This is technically a book question, but thought the chance of informed answers were better in Cameras.

Get the Thom Hogan book. I must admit that I don't know anything about either of these books, but I do know Thom Hogan's reputation: he's an authority on Nikon gear, he has a pleasant writing style, and he provides plenty of detail. His books are always eagerly anticipated and according the the buzz in the Nikon forums, his D80 guide doesn't disappoint.
