I have a hyper, just spayed, 1 year old golden retriever, and whenever someone comes over to our house, she jumps up on the person because she is so excited. One time, she knocked my little 5 year old cousin over, and by the time I tell her no, it's too late. Also, when she hears skateboarders pass by, she barks at them, and doesn't stop until she doesn't hear them anymore. I tell her no also, but again, it's too late. What should I do to correct these problems?

I had the same problem. And consistency is the key. Honestly, watching the Dog Whisperer (National Geographic Channel) did help. Ignoring the dog worked the best with mine. You could have a neighbor or friend help you practice with dry-run's of sorts. You could have them ring the doorbell and come in, and practice ignoring the dog. Our vet also suggested facing away from the dog when they try to jump. Really, telling them 'no' and yelling at them at the time doesn't work, because its already too late at that point. You just have to keep working at it, and reward her when guests come over and she stays calm. She'll get the picture.

I recommend having her wear a leash on in the house when people come over grab the leash if she goes to jump pull back in the leash and tell her OFF, do this every time she jumps. Dogs learn best when you are consistant. you can use the leash to correct the barking as well. one quick pull ont the leash and a stearn No will help, she's a golden, she will learn fast if you are consistant! Good luck A non treat training obeidence class would be a good idea as well.

got the same problem. Have the person ignore the dog until it settles. This is difficult so use a friend who is not afraid and have this friend over everyday until the dog stops.

As far as the barking, use a shock collar at small levels. they get the hint quickly......

my grandparents got these collarlike things that they put on their dogs, and every time they barked too loud, it would do the dog whistle thing and they would stop. mind you, they weren't guard dogs, they were shih tzus, so they really aren't supposed to bark. anyway, maybe there is one like that for dogs jumping on people, and as for the barking, only put the collar on her at certain times, like when she's playing outside, to know she isn't supposed to be barking at people, but leave it off at night so she doesn't alert you when someone tries to break in.

She is still young, and learning about life. Hence still some puppy behaviours. Teach her some hand signals. like raise your hand, then lower it while saying firmly "Down". It is a hard thing to stop if it's allowed to go on. Don't punish her. When she obeys you, reward her..praise her or give her a treat.

She needs LOTS of exercise - walks, playtime outside and stuff to let her get her energy out in a constructive way. Also about the biting - this is very serious and you should consult with a trainer - in person - for advice.

try grabbing the back of her leg.... above the knee joint....

we trained our dogs that way... i guess when dogs are in the wild their pack leader or whatever will bite them there when they are doing something wrong....

if they are really attention starved dogs ...when they do something bad ...simply ignore them...they will learn that when they do things they wont get attention.

I hope this helps :)
