It will give slightly when you press on the skin, but not until the point where it is mushy (much like an avocado). Usually the riper ones have a reddish skin as well, but this is not ALWAYS the case.

It is usually ripe when the skin is red or yellowish orange . However if they are shipped green it can be ripe while still being slightly green usually on one side. Also a ripe mango should be slighty soft when squeezed gently. There's nothing like a ripe mango.

usually i go by the color, because i have had hard mangos that were very ripe and sweet, I eat a mango when less then like 40% of it is green, so 60% red or yellow color

It should be soft to the touch and maybe have a tinge of red/orange to it - not too soft though, then it's over ripe but still edible.

The colour and firmness can be misleading. The real way to tell is by aroma. It should smell fragrant and tempting.

It should be slightly soft , and orange-ish. Also, if you can find an unripe one (all green) they are delicious with salt ... it sounds funny, but it's true! :)
