Nicholas H: Granted. I know Darwin didn't "win" you over to Atheism, but the question still remains...

Note to all: For those of you saying that if Darwin hadn't discovered evolution, then "someone" else would have -- that's just a presumptuous speculation. After all, no one before him presented the theory.

By my "Atheists/evolutionists" appellation, I was merely addressing both parties.
Keyword: "non-believers"

Maybe Christian....Seems to require the least amount of change in life...Read a couple verses to recite all the time, blame all the bad on the Devil or Adam, know that it doesn't matter cuz you're going to Heaven anyway...

I do fully accept evolution and I am an Asatruar. Not all "evolutionists" are atheists you know. Even if Darwin had never been born, someone would have come up with the theory, it was never a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN. And I must note, Darwin wasn't the first one to observe evolution, there were other scientists before him and at the same time all working on the theory.

I would still be atheist whether Darwin had lived or died; evolution is a separate subject from (dis)belief in gods. And if Darwin hadn't written Origin, somebody else would have. Evolution theory is the inevitable conclusion.
update: nobody thought it out before him because a minimum level of scientific knowledge and freedom from religous oppression was needed (remember Galileo?). But many of his contemporaries were working on the same thing, do you think science happens in a vacuum? Only religious madmen, er, prophets work that way. Funny, eh?

One could be an atheist, evolutionist, and still be a Buddhist. So I'd go for (3).
And if there hadn't been a Darwin, someone else would have provided the theory.

Probably Roman Catholic. That's the religion I was raised in. It has some fabulous art and pretty costumes; but the Protestants have better hymns.
Edit: Acid_zebra and others are right -- if Darwin hadn't published the theory of evolution by natural selection, someone else would have. In fact, his colleague Alfred Russel Wallace nearly beat Darwin to it.

not all evolutionists are as you and other idiots call "non-believers" my parents are christians and believe that evolution is how life started on this planet. so in summary get your facts straight, maybe all atheists are evolutionists, but not all evolutionists are atheists. some have are rather open minded to the evidence that science has provided. what do you "believers" have as evidence? i'll tell you what you have. A Book

I'm an atheist, and I belong to a religion...Are you saying I can't have both? I'm insulted.
But if I wasn't a non-believer, and I couldn't be what I am now (a Unitarian Universalist) I'd probably be a Christian, because that's what everyone around me is so I would have probably been brought up as. Unless you mean what would I switch to? Maybe Christian, but quite possibly Pagan.

I wouldn't be part of any cult/sect/religion, etc...
What makes you think that atheism was a result of Darwin? Have you ever heard of Diagoras? He was a fifth century BC sophist who declared that there were no gods.
Evolution is a theory. Atheism is a chioce.

What makes you feel that evolution and Darwin created atheism? Reading the Bible made me an atheist. If I had to choose, I would pick Buddhist.
