I'm planning to get a laptop from HP (Pavilion dv6000 series I believe) and I've been given an option for either WV Home Basic or Premium (or the third thing I can't remember... Business?). I would like to try Home Premium but they recommend 1 gb of ram... and that usually means something in this is going to drain my system ram.

Basically asking, is it worth going to Home Premium or just go with Home Basic? Personally, I like to know what's good in Home Premium for I heard there's special media things for music and movies. Please be specific about this if possible.

Vista Home Basic isn't going to have Aero, the fancy glass like interface. If this matters you should get Home Premium. If you are going with Vista, Home Basic really isn't worth it, unless all you are going to do is email and browse the web. If you are going to do anything else, you are probably going to want Home Premium, it has media center, and support for premium games.

And as was stated, its recommended to get at least a GB of RAM if you are going to be running Vista, no matter what version.

Getting the Basic version is a waste of money because you don't get any of the eye-candy Aero interface that comes with Vista. It's either Home Premium or stay with XP. Also if you can get a hold of it, the academic price on the Home Premium version is well under $100.

On the RAM issue, yes you need about a gig of ram to run smoothly, and that's because Vista utilizes RAM differently than XP. RAM is almost always being used well past the 50% mark regardless of whether you're running applications and that's because it tries to "pre-load" applications and data that it thinks you are most likely to run to make them load faster, simply speaking.

You'll need 1 Gig, no matter which version you choose. So don't let that be a limiting factor. Chances are, you'll pay a bundle more for Premium and even more for the Business edition. Check your needs, see which version will support it best, and install Ubuntu :) (just kidding, I meant: get the version you'll need).
