Yes, and yes.
You're dad is right: Microsoft is once again pulling money out of everybody's pockets. And yes, Vista is better as XP was. At least, it will be after the release of ServicePack 1, until then you're stuck with buggy drivers (if any, because not all manufacturers are up to speed with releasing new drivers), buggy programs (because Microsoft has never been able to release an Operating System without a bunch of bugs in the first release), and a ton of money going out of your pockets for licenses and hardware upgrades (because most computers sold before 6-2006 will need a hardware upgrade).

That is a very hard to answer kind of question. It is like asking if the Honda Accord 2001 was the real deal. Yes, it was the real deal back in 2000 when it came out, but you have to understand that operating systems will always be a work in progress, just like cars and many other things that you can buy to make your life easier. It comes down to a personal decision where you ask yourself of you are satisfied with the features and functionality of Windows XP or whichever OS you might be using. It is obvious that you will get extra bells and whitles with the current year model, but it will only be the real deal for the time being. You wait a while and something else will come along just like with all comsumer products, cars, OS's, Stereos, PC's etc.
