I work at a vet clinic, and we see a lot of dogs with intestinal parasites, like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. I know most of the parasites dogs get are species specific. But I also know it is possible for a human to get them. But from what I have learned they act differently in humans than in dogs. They tend to effect the eyes, or other parts of the body. But I am watching this gross show on animal planet about people who have had them in their intestines. Working around intestinal parasites nearly every day at the vet clinic, I get worried about catching them. While I try to be as cautious as possible, wearing gloves, keeping the area clean, and washing my hands very good, I still sometimes get scared about it.
Has anyone ever had an intestinal parasite?

I have not been infected but I work at a pediatric office and this lady was in there with her son that was about 4 or 5 years old.
He had this worm that came out of his butt. I kid you not...this worm was about 4 inches !! She had the worm in a little plastic sandwich bag. Well, we sent the worm to the lab and it came back "ascaris" which is a parasitic worm. Anyone can catch it by touching there mouth with their hand that has been contaminated with eggs from soil or other contaminated sources or by ingesting contaminated food or water. There's other worms like tape worms that humans can get. All these infections can be treated.
The key is to wash your hands a lot. Wash after every pet. Don't let it interfere with your job. Those pets need you !

You have to swallow a worm to get an intestinal parasite. That's why our pets can get them. Cats eat fleas, which carry worm eggs. Dogs eat anything. Just don't eat eat anything you encounter in a vet's office, and you will be fine.

You should worry more about the meat you eat (if you eat meat.)

I saw one on House the other night. I don't think it is very common in the US.

Never had one, but I'm a nurse. Your risk is very small. Try to forget about it and concentrate on other things.
