Okay, for some reason, for a while now my computer has been using approximately 200 megabytes of page file space, constantly. I have no idea why, and I'm afraid it might be interfering with certain programs. I've got 256 megabytes of standard memory and a maximum of about 400 megabytes of virtual memory. The task manager says my processes are taking up some 90 megabytes of memory altogether, and 35 megabytes of that is being used for FireFox. My fully updated AVG Free Edition doesn't find any viruses. In short, there doesn't seem to be any reason my computer should need 200 megabytes of page file space. Any idea why this would be, and/or how I could fix it?

256 MB of RAM is way too little for most PCs today. In the beginning, we operated on highly efficient Operating Systems that used the most out of 64 MB of RAM. Those days are long gone. The latest versions of Windows OS's gobble up RAM like locusts, as well as the Microsoft products we load on top of them. If you plan to have more than 2 or 3 products or windows open at the same time, I recommend no less than 1 GB of memory. If this is anything slower than DDR or DDR2 memory, consider more or upgrading your PC to something newer. The problem will only get worse as more software products are released with no concern of how much memory they hog.@

non everlasting archives should not be 0. It under no circumstances is. CCleaner is of marginal use. solid for deleting temp archives and cleansing out your browser cache. Malwarebytes is a plague remover, no longer an antivirus software. cutting-element OSes do no longer desire defragging very usually, as quickly as 1 / 4 max. It does not speed up the pc. If it is been some years in view that its final reinstall, then this is in all threat the only thank you to make is administered properly. Backup your archives, format rigidity C (long format, no longer rapid), and reinstall. the reason in the back of slow format is to reason the HD to study each and every sector. which will reason it to restoration undesirable sectors or mark them as undesirable. Reinstalling the OS eliminates all the gathered junk that the OS has to plow by using. in case you could borrow a replica of spinrite from somebody, run it. This software will reason each and every sector on the HD to be study. mutually as you always do no longer see any effects, in basic terms doing which will reason the circuitry on the HD to do issues like circulate archives off undesirable sectors and onto new ones. All cutting-element confusing drives have undesirable sectors on them. As time is going on, extra sectors bypass undesirable. The HD has the potential to self restore and analyzing the HD might reason it to try this. SpinRite itself will circulate archives too. very usually, the reason for a slow pc is the OS having to conquer on the HD attempting to study archives from undesirable sectors.
