Go onto some exercise sites, and they typically have some sport-specific exercises you can do. Volleyball exercises are great because they give you conditioning, and you also build up some of the skills needed for playing. Lunges are great, "suicide sprints" (sprint to a point, and then back to the starting point, then go to the next further point, and then back to the starting point, and then to another yet further point. . .) are wonderful for building up quickness and reaction time. You can usually find the large rubber bands and do some exercises with them - they will build up strength in your arms and add flexibility in the joints. Finger tip push ups will also aid in the setting.
For drills to do, get a volleyball and hit the ball against the wall. I use it still to warm up my shoulder before a game or tournament. You hit the ball down as if hitting (spiking) it, and it bounces down and then against the wall, then back to you. When you get good at it, you will be able to continue doing it without stopping to start it again. Another thing is to set and/or pass a volleyball into a basket or bucket to improve your accuracy. A lot of drills you may want to have another help you. A good thing - probably the best thing - is to get a friend who is also looking to try out and "pepper" with that friend. Peppering is when you pass the ball to the other person, they set it back to you, and then you spike the ball back at the other person, they pass it up to you, you set it, the other hits the ball, you pass it. . . You continue doing that for a while. It will give you ball control, form practice and it is wonderful conditioning.
I think a final thing would be to meet with the coach that is having the try outs. Ask them what they recommend you doing to work on getting on the team. They will be willing to give you some ideas for drills and what they will be looking for. It will also get you the image of really being serious about getting on the team, and that you are willing to go the extra mile to be a great player. That alone will do you wonders for getting on the team.

The only way is to really practice with people that are good at it. If you can wait a year, go to a volleyball camp in the summer.

go to a skills camp. ive played for 4 years and every summer i go to a camp. if you dont have one around you try colleges. also, if there is one thing you need to learn b4 trying out it is your serve. the most important part of your serve is the toss. sit on the couch or in your room and toss it up in the air. make sure it lands DIRECTLY in front of you for best results. other than serving, i would say the hardest pert of vb is setting. i hated doing it at first and now i am the setter on my team. hope i helped.
p.s. try going to the ymca and practice hitting the ball around in the raquetball courts. thats what i do on the weekends.

Hey, I love VB & at first was horrible! But what I did to practice was I Bumped/Set a VB against a wall. You could also find someone to volley it with. If you have a shed or a garage, hit it up there & let it roll down. When it gets to you, hit it up there again.
If you don't know how to do all of the skills, ask someone to show you. Good Luck! I hope my advice helped.

Go out and practise with people who know what they are doing. You'll get much better results when you play with people who are skilled.
Another way is one that has stood the test of time. Film. Go out and watch any video of international, beach and Olympic play you can find. It is hands done the most boring way but if you study the mannerisms of the higher up players who could apply those to your own game.

Go to www.volleyball.com, it gives you drills and lots of other info it really helped me when I was getting ready to play volleyball. They have a shop there to so you can by equetment. shoes, bags to hold your equment. Also remember to eat healhey food, drink pluntey of water, and be ready to run,streach,dig,set,spike,block,dive,serve,pass,and roll. Hope this helps, it helped me out alot and know I am one of the best setters on my team. I am also a awesome passer.

watch some volleyball on tv or go pass the ball back and forth with your friends go get a hang of it..good luck! its really a great sport!
