Im not sure its such a good idea to talk to him with his buddies around. any suggestions?

You'll never know if he's in to you if you don't try.
(I'm going to call him Bill)
I would walk up to him and with a smile and just say hi Bill and keep on walking, late his friend do the rest, They'll say wow I think she like you dude or oh Bill's has a girl friend.
You put the your line in the water by saying hi, now it's up to the fish to take the bate.

Try to find out about a lot the guy you like. Then, try to get to know one of his friends in the group. When you meet the group, say hi to the guy you know. When he introduces you to the group, you can use that chance to open a conversation with your guy. Your knowledge about him will help in the opening the conversation.

You could just walk up to him and say..."Hey there, got a minute?". It would be simple, and direct...it's not like he's going to bite you or anything...he's just a people.

i have this same problem! i try to find a time where he's alone, then race to get there before his friends get back(not litterally race but you know)and i try to wrok it out from there....
