walking in on his/her dad and the dads girlfriend while they were having relations?

Sure.

And then, the trick is, to figure out a way to deal with it...

For the child, this can be an extremely awkward and embarrassing thing. I believe it is up to the parent to approach the subject and talk about it... it is through this that they can take away or reduce some of the trauma.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be traumatic, but that it doesn't have to be something that someone carries with them for the rest of their lives in a negative way.

I would say that it is possible. But it depends on how you view it. The thing is, was your dad still married to your mom? If so, the trauma is understandable. If he was free to have relations with this woman then it should not cause you any trauma assuming they are both adults. This is normal behavior for to adults. Not having "relations" might be more of a concern if he feel that strongly about one another. We all have certain sexual needs that do not end with age alone.

As for the answer pointing to a "King of the Hill" episode, "What the heck does what happens on a cartoon have to do with real life?" Please come back to reality if you are going to answer this kind of question!!!

Definately. The thing that sucks is every time you see that person you think of that image in your mind. It's horrible. Try to think of other things....
