How do you cut a cake into eight pieces using only three straight cuts and without moving any pieces around?

(And why do you lose 5 points asking a question when without questions there would no answers?)

Make two cuts across the cake to cut it into four quarters. Then make one horizontal cut across the whole of the cake that cuts each quarter in two.

The reason you lose 5 points when asking a question is to keep a balance between the number of askers and the number of questioners. There need to be more answerers than questioners. If you didn't lose 5 points there'd be too many people asking questions and not enough people answering them. It's also to encourage you to pick a best answer since you get 3 of those points back when you do.

Cut it in four quarters with two slices and then one cut horizontally across the middle of the whole cake for eight pieces.

two vertical, one horizontal. 8 slices are a quarter of the top, and half the side.

I'm not sure, maybe so no one gets too high of points?
