Should our volunteer military be force to deploy countless number of times? Should we not share the burden to keep our country free?

Only serious opinions, and please let me know your reason for whichever side you pick.

Well I'll tell you what...there are two ways to end this senseless Iraq campaign.

A.)Send each American taxpayer an individual bill to pay for it

B.) Bring back the draft

Option A is never going to happen. Option B would end it quicker than roaches with the lights on. For all the talk of "sacrifice" and "duty" and "struggle of our generation".....does anyone here really feel like we're at war with anybody? If this war is as crucial to the determination of all mankind then why aren't we ALL fighting it? Maybe we should. Vietnam evoked the outrage it did over men being sucked out their lives into a distant war the purpose of which was unclear. The only difference this time is there is no draft and we're not all feeling it on a personal level. So my answer is yes. If this is as paramount a struggle as Bush would have everyone beleive then we shoudl all taste it. Shouldn't we? Or am I missing something.

One more thing. Dollars to donuts the first ones to shriek at a draft notice are those right wing internet heros who have no problem spitting on anyone who disagrees with the war. Until they're forced to fight it themselves.

A family member of mine tried to join the army two years ago. He has less than high school education, no GED, and couldn't run the distance they wanted in the time required (something like 1 1/4 miles in 10 minutes).
So a recruiter came to his house the other day and said he now is eligible. Not eligible to try again - eligible to join.
I have a friend who is German. He was required to do a year of national service in his late teens or early 20s. He chose to work at a hospital. He described the system to me, and it didn't sound so bad.
So, to answer your question, I think a draft that included non-military service options would be a pretty good idea. But a vietnam-style war draft would be bad.
Some people say the army is the cream of the crop -- that's true, but I don't think it will stay that way if everyone has to make 4 tours of duty in a combat zone. The best and brightest still have a breaking point and its not right to have leaders who are ignorant of that.
They are breaking the military with this war. Troops are arriving in Iraq who have not been trained on the equipment they have available there. A draft would not solve this problem, because then you would simply have more undertrained, undereqipped soldiers over there.
Not sure what all that money went to when our guys still dont have enough uparmored humvees.
Anyway, my answer is yes and no. Yes if it were in the German style, including military and nonmilitary national service options. No while the current administration is in charge.

Well that's a tough thing. Prior to it being abused during the Vietnam conflict the draft system was working perfectly fine. But the nation has changed so much since than. The general rebelliousness of today's youth. Not to mention Apathy and laziness has become rampant as well. I do not think a draft would work as part of its success previously was from the innate patriotism we had as a nation. It was just doing out duty to our country. If we had the same standards and pride we had in the 40's and 50's I would say yes draft away. But these days no way.

That's a tough one. I mean, look at all the young people out there protesting and the ones that can't even find Iraq on a map, and the ones who are Bush bashers, and the ones that don't care to say the pledge of allegiance.
I mean seriously, who want and ignorant person like that fighting next to them. I think it would be more of a hindrance than anything really. Maybe leave combat positions to volunteers and only use the dummies for something like kitchen staff or working in a factory. ;) It's scary the kind of people you might get with a draft.

At this time I do not feel that we should reinstate the draft. I realize that many volunteers have served more than once in Iraq & it does seem unfair. But if we allow a draft, think how many more would be sent to Iraq by this President! If we had a draft, he just might get us into Iran sooner than we think.
Many reserves now serving their 2nd duty in Iraq, will have put their time in shortly, in fact some already have their time in, so there will be less reserves to call up, if they re-up, they must know what is in store for them & choose to do so. No draft unless we really needed it & we don't at this time.

you do not have any further some thing to emphasize about. First, we've 1000's of 1000's of infantrymen already enlisted in the militia, so 40,000 is only a drop in the bucket. That suggested, regardless of if regular McChrystal requested for 5,000,000 infantrymen and we did no longer have them, there is not any way our congress would enable yet another draft after the debacle in Vietnam. that is not any longer no longer plausible, yet with my expertise and heritage, i'd wager there is about 0.01% probability of it occurring. Sleep properly, newborn. ;)

No way in hell. I'll never be forced into the army over a war I disagree with for a country I don't particularly care to represent. If the draft is EVER reinstated, I'm becoming a citizen of another country.

NO!! You say you are a veteran, do you want to be out on the battlefield with a soldier who doesn't have that drive in him/her to do what they really believe in? In the middle of a battle do you want to have to babysit and not be able to rely on these draftee's? Ask some of those who went thru Vietnam? As for being deployed over and over you shouldn't sign up for the education but sign up for repeated deployments. Many are signing up right now knowing this.

The Military DOES NOT WANT A DRAFT.
They have the Cream of the Crop who volunteer for service.
If there was a draft, they realize that a lot of little Democrat hate America types would be drafted.
That destroys the Military when Democrats are in it.
Because Democrats hate America.

No because in the current conflict (NO MATTER WHAT YOUR POLITICS ARE), we are not fighting for OUR FREEDOM. We are fighting to make Iraq free and a democracy. If this was WWII or a war that mattered, then yes. However, look at the wars/conflicts we have fought since then- Kosovo, Somalia, Haiti, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq War I/Desert Storm- can you SERIOUSLY SAY OUR FREEDOM WAS AT STAKE?? The govt admitted in every one of those it was about defending someone else or preventing a political group who we didn't like from winning a civil war (none of which were above minimal threats to us- Do you think Somalia was really going to be able to do anything??) I don't think we should force people to go fight for someone else's freedom and give their lives for it.
