Smoking is banned indoors at my Univeristy and everyone has to smoke outside. This is fine but now all of the smokers congregate right outside of the doors at the entrance of the building. Every day I go to class and have to walk through a cloud of smoke and hold my breath. Why are they allowed to smoke right outside of the door?

I think smokers should have to go to the side of the building or far away from the doors to smoke.

I have asthma and can't stand smoke at all. I don't think that it is right to have to hold my breath and basically run inside to keep from smelling cigarette smoke. Non-smokers shouldn't be inconvienienced.

What do you think? Does it bother you when people smoke at the main entrance of buildings?

At the University I attended in Oklahoma, it was illegal to smoke right outside the doors. You had to be at least 15 feet away from them when smoking, so its probably that either they don't know that they are supposed to be that far away, or they just ignore the law and don't care. You should get in touch with the University(most likely the campus police) and find out exactly what the rules on smoking by the doors are. If they are in fact breaking the rules, then you can alert the University and they should post signs(or posters) on the doors.

Actually, the law where I live is that they are supposed to smoke at least 25 feet away from the entrance to a building. I suspect the people you are talking about are just bending that law. So they're not really "allowed".

It personally doesn't bother me too much; I have become very good at holding my breath! But I agree with you that people who smoke shouldn't do so in a way that exposes others to secondhand smoke if they don't choose to be exposed.

There was a problem with this at my university, and they passed a regulation that no one could smoke within 20 feet of the building--it was never enforced. I hated it as well, and always entered buildings through side doors to avoid the cancer cloud.

They're probably not allowed to smoke right outside the doors, but no one bothers to do anything about it. Where I live (Ontario, Canada), it is illegal to smoke within 15 metres (around 45 feet) of the doors of a public building.

In Canada you cannot smoke within 9 meters of the doorway to a public building. But, this is rarely enforced. I am sure there is somebody at your school you could talk to about this. I am sure you are not the only asthmatic with this problem!

No one should have to walk through a cloud of smoke. Some hospitals and institutions have totally banned smoking on their property.

Since I am one of those who does smoke at the entrance of buildings, no it does not bother me. I know, I'm bad and selfish but oh well. I agree with the person who said to find another entrance.

Sorry about your medical condition but why should we smokers be inconvienced because you don't smoke? It's a lose-lose situation. I suggest you take another entrance.
