Retiring in Thailand is an excellent choice but I am not sure why Sakon Nakhon province. Generally speaking, the north-east of Thailand is poor and lacks many of the facilities you will soon come to miss. Foreign food, reliable medical care, common use of English language are a few.
I have lived in Thailand for the past 15 years, speak Thai reasonably well and can function anywhere in Thailand but would be very loath to live somewhere as out of the way as Sakon Nakhon. Why not look more at Chonburi, Chiang Mai or Bangkok? Chiang Mai is not so hot and hostile and has the benefit of relative cheapness, some parts of Chonburi outside Pattaya are equally inexpensive and offer easy access to Bangkok or Pattaya if foreign support is needed and Bangkok has everything but costs more.

Hi - I am from USA and retired in Tak Province.. There are plusses and minuses to any choice of "where" to live in Thailand. I have spent alot of time in Bkk and Cha'am area. I have lived in Tak for about 2 years now and think it would be similar in certain ways to what you might find in Sakon Nakhon... You can email me personally at kenk2424@yahoo.com and I would be glad to answer any specific questions you have and elaborate on this further - - please include an email address to respond to if you contact me and put Retire Thailand in the subject line so that I don't delete -

In general, Thailand for me has been a wonderful choice - My costs of living are off the charts minimal and we live very nicely. I would be glad to pass along any pointers - - best to you - good choice too!!

Good on you, Sakhon Nakhon is a nice place to spend retirement. Makes easy ravel across to Laos from there if you want to. I am sure Spanky can provide you with the right advice, and I hope to have yours when my turn comes.

Good luck.

I am also retired military and living in Thailand, I take it you been here before and know someone here. My advice is to read as much as you can from other retired people living over here, as retired military you also can get mail service for letter mail only at JUSMAGTHAI in bkk (this is helpful if you have mail like credit cards mailed to you.. be sure to have an account in the states to draw money from. I recommend direct deposit to your state side bank and talk to them about money transfer. Make sure your credit card company knows your be living in thailand. Now the financial situation with the baht really sucks, you get a better rate here in country then out of country. Lots to think about, good luck. you can email me at bob_7162000@yahoo.com if you have more questions about retired militaries in thailand.
