I think it would come down to what you stole, have you ever taken a pen, a marker or paper, made a un-authorized phone call or maybe taken a nap during work hours, this is theft. if you are talking about taking money or something very expensive or personal property from another employee, this might be a problem. give it a shot, be honest, all they can say is no. and if they do say no, I hope you are shamed enough, and honest enough with your self not to do something like that again.

God I hope so. The last thing we need is another crooked cop. And hey if you rationalized stealing from your employer why should we totally trust our safety and property to you when you were working as a police officer. No the cops have hiring standards and polygraphs to keep folks like you out. God bless them for that.

Definitely - you will be disqualified during your background check, which is always done personally by an officer. They will question your employer(s) and also the employees asking personal questions about you.

Were you convicted? If you were never brought up on charges and it was a long time ago, be honest. Say it was a stupid mistake and you are embarassed by it.
