he leaves town in the starship enterprise (on Friday the day of the week). Then they go into a sub space rip in the time continuum where time actually goes 4/3rds faster than normal. So they are thrown forward into time 4 days longer than 3 and return on Friday (again the day of the week). Mr Data could explain better than me but that is how it happened.
