It will all come down to money earned. They only allow 20 to run, so every year the horses on the bubble and their people hold their breath. You can get a good idea by watching which horse is taking down the biggest purses.
At this point I assume Nobiz Like Shobiz and Street Sense are in.

As of right now there are 450 horses nominated.
No real way to tell which 20 will be in the Derby except to wait.
I think future pool #1 had 23 possible starters, but most of them probably won't be in the field.
I would say at this time:
Nobiz Like Shobiz
Notional
Ravel
Street Sense
Hard Spun
But it wouldn't be surprising if 2 or 3 of those 5 didn't make it.
After April 14, which is the Ark. Derby and the BlueGrass, most of the Derby Trail preps will be complete, and you will know most of the field.
Maybe a month before that, after the Southwest (this Monday), the Fountain of Youth, the Robert Lewis, the Gotham and the La. Derby, the picture might be a little less fuzzy.

The Coolmore Lexington Stakes is the final graded Stakes race to be run before the Derby on April 21. The top 20 earners will be set after that race and we'll then know the 20 runners eligible for the 133rd Kentucky Derby.

It hasn't been determined yet...one, you have to be nominated, pay fees prior to entry...and now heres the BIG catch...you have to be ranked in the top 20 nominated in GRADED STAKES EARNINGS in order to make the gate...so you would generally have to have won a graded prep race or placed well in a few... these graded stakes take place in Keenland, Calif, Fla, Kentucky, New York, La. and Ark prior to May... and most horsemen and players look forward to these races to get a gauge on who will perform well in the Derby as well as theTriple Crown race series...

We will definitely know by the week before, but the field should shape up in the coming months. If you follow 3 year old racing, you can see who runs well and who doesn't. the ones who do run well will make it... but horses can get scratched up until the race, so we won't know who is definitely running until the starting gates open.
