It would depend on how you define cult according to this YES
1. cult -- (adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices)
cult, cultus, religious cult -- (a system of religious beliefs and rituals; "devoted to the cultus of the Blessed Virgin")
It is more recently that we consider the word cult to belong to a group that is extreme and to have different meanings which can also be found in dictionaries.
So pick your definition of cult before say yes or no to this question.
According to this NO
a religious group, often living together, whose beliefs are considered extreme or strange by many people:
a. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing.

According to sociologists, a cult is just a group of people gathering together because of similar beliefs. The word cult carries negative feelings because of modern-day happenings of some cults. Personally, being a Seventh-day Adventist Christian I believe it to be a legitimate branch of Christianity.

I would say both. Having been a former Jehovah's witness, their beliefs stem from the same source and the 1874 date of armageddon both stem from measurements inside of a pyramid rather than the bible. The other issue is after having seen some of the literature, the rapture idea is insane. All good people being taken to heaven, satan left on earth alone for 1000 years, bad people resurected to be tried (without any positive influence) and then judged according to their actions. Call me crazy, but judgement would have already been passed, the magazine pictures hookers and drunks coming out of graves with whiskey bottles in their hands to meet up with their old pal Satan and have the hookers show them a real good time. (Gee, I wonder what decision they'll make). They're all cults, the only true religion is the personal relationship between you and God. Read your bible and find the truth for yourself. Prov 2:1-5.

Is "neither" an option?
I have no problems with the Seventh Day Adventists. But I can't call them a 'legitimate' branch of Christianity, simply because they have no historical precedent. Christianity, from its inception, was defined 'legally' by a specific governmental process.

I have a friend who belongs to this group, and at first I was fairly leery of it and thought it could be a cult.
I do consider it a true Christian denomination, if a little under the 'law' so to speak, and therefore it would not be my choice of church.
But my friend is very happy there, and I fully expect to be worshiping and praising God with her in His future for us.

Having been raised a SDA myself in my deluded previous enable me answer... that is troublesome to apply scripture for this reason in trouble-free terms because there will be too a lot scripture to submit disprove their claims. they seem to be a faulty sect of Christianity. they trust in the fundamentals... faith in Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism of the believer that is about it. some thing else is loopy. they are what Paul fought hostile to throughout the time of his day, legalists... they attempt to tack on all kinds of guidelines and guidelines to salvation. they trust in salvation through works. they trust that Sunday worship grow to be the mark of the beast... this variety of idea structures creates elitism. it is, look how holy i'm and how dirty you're... incorrect! maximum held onto the idea that in trouble-free terms a 144000 would make it into heaven. Wow! they attempt to snare you into the fold through utilising Revelation Seminars. They discuss bible prophecy in the begining and ultimately on the top of it they exhibit they are SDA's. through that aspect you frightened of hell and meet up when you're not any further careful. do not even get me all started on that crack pot E.G.White. She all started from an similar circulation that the millerites got here from. Miller grow to be incorrect about 1844 and the meant coming of Jesus. even besides the undeniable fact that scripture it seems that says no guy knows the hour yet in trouble-free terms God the daddy. Then E.G. White made up some daft excuse like Jesus went into the holy of holies in the temple in heaven and is actively judging people. So, 1844 grow to be easily that and not in any respect his coming. no longer very biblically sound. i imagine Charles Taze Russell of the Jehova Witnesses popularity got here from that ordeal to boot. ought to were a unusual 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. persons, if anybody tells you you need to affix their particular denomination then do not connect. they are finished of it. purchase the bible and use a respected translations (do not use theirs) and learn for yourselves the reality. Then and in trouble-free terms then would you've a real degree to judge some thing to.

Everyone has their own faith, and there will always be someone who thinks its a cult. Be comfortable in what you believe, and who gives a squat what everyone else thinks.
