my dog is a 9 month yorkie, and i was wondering if he can swim, how do u know if he can or ever will swim

most dogs can but i't a matter of trial and error. My dog loves to swim and I take him to the beach whenever I can. The first time I took him to the beach I just went in the water with him and he followed me. After that he was a natural water baby.

Take him to some water and see how he does. Of course you will be right there in case he doesn't swim, all dogs do not know how to swim. I have a St.Bernard,she does nothing when you put her in water above her head,her legs hang straight down,no doggie paddle,nothing. So, we try to stay away from deep water,she does like to play in it. It is not instinct as some have said,I thought that was where the term doggie paddle came from also,but it is not true. Some breeds are water dogs and do know how to swim,Labs,Newfoundlands etc. Good luck, and enjoy your puppy.

I have a Yorkie and he can swim, although he doesn't like it too much! I just put him in the pool with me and let him go. He started swimming to the side of the pool and got out as soon as he could!

All dogs can swim. They just don't all know that they can. I've even known Labs that were afraid of the water!!

I've actually read that all dogs can swim, except Chows. They can swim, but the wieght of their wet fur pulls them down.

put him in a bath tub full of water. Most dogs can swim naturally

it's called the "doggy paddle" for a reason ;)
it's natural instinct. don't worry, provided your dog has no hindering medical conditions, he can swim!

if you have a baby pool you can fill it up just enough so your dog wont drown then put ypur puppy in it slowly and see if your dog can swim

we have a mini dach puppy, and we went into my mom's pool, and took him with us. slowly put him into the water, and he started paddling for the side. we were always in the water with him, and never threw him in.
