This is one that my mom always made, and I've been making it for years as well....
Red Velvet Cake
Ingredients::
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 1/2 oz red food coloring
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon soda
1 tablespoons vinegar
Preparation:
Cream shortening; beat in sugar gradually. Add eggs, one at a time; beat well after each addition. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to creamed mixture. Add salt, flour and vanilla alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Sprinkle soda over vinegar; pour vinegar over batter.
Stir until thoroughly mixed. Bake in 3 8-inch pans or 2 9-inch pans for 30 minutes at 350°.

RED VELVET CAKE
2 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 c oil
1 c buttermilk

1-2oz bottle red food coloring (or 2-1oz bottle)
Mix all ingredients together and bake at 350F for about 30 to 35 minute.
Icing:
1 Box (16oz) confectioner's sugar (sifted)
1 stick butter, softened
1 8oz package cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup mixed nuts
sugar
butter
cream cheese
vanilla
Combine first 5 ingredients. Add remaining ingredients until icing forms peaks. Fold in the nuts and spread over the cake.

you will need:
13x9 foil baking pans
nonstick spray
large mixing bowl
electric mixer
medium mixing bowl
For Cake Layer:
1 box German chocolate cake mix,Betty Crocker (18.25 ounce)
1/2 cup butter (1 stick ) soften
1 egg
1 ounce red food coloring
1. set up grill for indirect cooking(no heat source under bars) spray one 13x9 inch foil pan with spray. set aside
2.in a large mixing bowl combine cake mix, butter,egg,and food coloring beat with electric mixer on low speed until all combined press cake mixture into prepared pan
3 place foiled baking pan in a second folied pan for stabillity and insulation place on hot grill cover grill bake 40 to 50 min. or until bars just begin to pull away from sides rotate the pan half way threw the cooking.
4 remove form grill cool compleatly
