Most enter the navy already knowing. Usually you will be assigned to what's called an A School after boot camp which is where you receive spefic trainign on whatever job skill you qualified for. Others enlist without an A school designation either because they simply do not know what they want to do, the particaular training they hoped for isn't available, or they don't qualify for anything. Qualification is based on your ASVAB score which is similar to the SAT. Halfway through boot camp those with no training designation meet with a counselor who will go over their qualifications and set them up for an A school after training.

As far as where are stationed afterwards, there is no guarantee and they do tel lyou that up front. You can state a preference but it comes down to where you are needed most.

After boot camp you go to your "A" school no matter what. When you are near completing "A" school you will either be given a "C" school or you will fill out a "Dream sheet" for where you would like to get stationed. If you are unrealistic in your choices on your dream sheet you will be seriously dissapointed. If on the other hand you want to go to sea and you actually look to see what kind of billets are available for your rating then you will probably get what you want. If your "A" school is extremely short you may not fill out a dream sheet. The school will already have a stack of orders and will allow the class to choose where they wan t to go based on your class ranking i.e. best gpa picks first worst gpa gets last set. These types of schools usually give you a day or two to trade orders with classmates and then lock everyone in. Just remember if you are new to the Navy you should expect to go to sea.

Well if you have an "A" School in your contract you can choose a school that is in a specific area. Not a good idea as if you choose a school based on the location you may not work in a field you enjoy. After "A" School or boot camp if you don't have a school the first duty station is based on the needs of the navy. You can negotiate for you future duty stations during the last year of your tour.

You get sent where you are needed.
What you want means nothing.
That's the way it should be.
No one is "special".
Your "requests" will be considered later on.
And it's fair.
(Thanks why Dan Rather never finished Marine Boot Camp. He went running home crying to Mommie.)

No, you don't, and don't let the recruiter tell you that you do, because you don't.
