Yes, you can substitute butter for Crisco. I, personally, prefer it to lard, as it does not have all the yucky stuff in it.

Butter should work in place of shortening. Another biscuit recipe, using butter or shortening, is this:
Baking Powder Biscuits
(from a 1933 Recipe)
Ingredients:
2 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
4 tablespoons butter or shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
about 3/4 cup milk
Sift Flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt, and sift again. Cut in shortening or butter. (this is where I use my hands by rubbing the butter into the flour). Add milk gradually, stirring until soft dough is formed. Turn out on slightly floured board and lightly "knead" for 30 seconds, enough to shape. Roll 1/2 inch thick and cut with 2 inch floured biscuit cutter. Bake on ungreased sheet in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes. Makes 12 biscuits. You can also make tiny tea biscuits that are only 1 1/2 inches wide with a small cutter or glass bottom. These are great served with tea, jam or honey. Makes 24.

Yes, you can however, crisco has a quality that makes biscuits flakier than butter does. You could do half butter half crisco. You could also do all butter if you wish.
The recommendation for not over-handling the dough is dead on.
Also, I find adding 1 tsp cream of tartar/recipe (average recipe found in standard cookbook which makes about 10 biscuits or so) helps them rise up. Also helpful is using a sharp knife which doesn't compress the sides of the biscuits.

Yes, you can substitute butter. Same amount.
The secret to great biscuits is to NOT play with the dough. Don't knead it. Mix it until it all sticks together, then gently roll it out, with either a rolling pin, or your hands. Cut into biscuits with a biscuit cutter or a small glass.
Bake as directed.

Yes you can use butter but you will change the texture. Crisco, (or vegetable shortening), gives baked goods a flakier texture whereby butter adds flavor.

Yes you can sub butter. Your buiscuits will not be as airy and fluffy, but they're gonna small like heaven and be just as delicious (if not more). So texture will be different and biscuits will be shorter, but will be great.
(Hope you don't have a cholestrol issue) ;o)

The best bisciuts use bacon grease and buttermilk and NOT crisco and milk.
i know it sounds gross, but I swear it's true. that's how my Grandma makes hers. MMMMmmmm
Oh...and you only "turn" your dough 3 times before you roll it out and cut out the biscuits.
