When the U>S. and China were "not speaking" to each other diplomatically., Any contact with China was considered subversive in the sense that you were considered to be "soft" on communism. Republicans were considered to be TOUGH on China, and Democrats were considered less antagonistic because they figured US could not continue to ignore that large a country economically or politically..Therefore--when Nixon reached out to China--he did what no Democratic president could have done without great criticism..NO Republican would dare say Nixon was soft on communism..

Perhaps because Nixon was involved in the Watergate scandal. Nixon going to China would mean he can clean up any mess and be gone.

Richard Nixon was an ardent anti-Communist in the 50s and 60s. No one would question his motives in going to China--they would know it wasn't to have the Reds and US become closer governmentally. Liberals who had advocated approaching China would have been looked on with suspicion--were they really trying to turn the US Communist?
