To retire an American Flag it is supposed to be burned with a ceremony. I believe that the Boy Scouts will do this.

The correct answer is a ceremoinal burning.

There is a proper, respectful way to burn a flag.

First it is "rendered to not be a flag" by cutting the blue field out, then cutting the cloth into pieces. These are stacked and then placed in the burner. (one group made a special burner from the exhaust nozzle of a jet fighter that had been used in combat)

Assorted ceremonies have been developed.

Ask your local BSA troop. They may do an annual flag retirement and burning ceremony.

American flags that are too severely worn or damaged to be honorably used must be disposed of by burning. Consider contacting a military unit, Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop in your area; these groups often have flag-burning ceremonies to serve the community.

The correct procedure is to burn them, many of the veteran organizations , like the VFW will accept them and destroy them for you. In some cases veteran cemeteries will destroy them for you because most of those organizations have flags that become tattered and they must be destroyed ,so some of them will do it as a public service.

All of the "old soldier's organizations" like the VFW and DAV and American Legion will take them and dispose of them properly.
