If you mean going out like with the opposite sex, it means you were invited. Going out .with friends just means you have made plans yourself and are leaving the house.

I think in the ref. that some teens use it in:
dating someone

Other def would be:
doing activies with another person..outside of your confines

Ex: dinner, movie, lake, musuem, lunch...
