ok. first off, a heroin addict that is not on lock down WILL go out and try to get more (if they're really hooked) because the effects of heroin withdrawal are just plain horrible. so putting someone in a room and telling them to stop, well, won't do it. as others have answered, the best bet is a detox clinic. but if this must happen without a clinic, i also have good advice for you. first off, go to GNC, buy some melatonin (which is the natural chemical your eyes release to make you go to sleep) and also get a bunch of calcium-magnesium pills (because heroin attacks the bone, thus, a heroin addict has a HUGE deficiency of those needed chemicals. a multi vitamin won't hurt. do not try and feed this person, anything you feed them will come out via puke anyway, but try to sneak it small and light things like soup. even though it will sometimes feel uncomfortable, always keep this person heavily warm and covered. if this person is a super-duper addict and REALLY can't get off of the **** you can go as far as finding any medication containing codeine to try and ward off some of the withdrawal symptoms. more than anything, this person also needs moral support. always be by his or her side, hug them, kiss them, tell them everything will be OK.

god i could ramble on this forever, and this makes me very sad... why? look at my source. god... i f'n hate the ****... e-mail me if you have any specific questions, i would be more than delighted to answer.

OK EDIT: i just realized YOU'RE the one with the problem. god... email me... we can share stories :)
but seriously you being here and asking this is the first step. go through with it. it will be THE WEEK FROM HELL but when it's all done and over, you will love your life, and youself. and after you kick it, every day you wake up in the morning, look yourself in the mirror, and say "i love you, and i'm gonna take care of you."

the only way for you to stay off Heroin is to come to the place in your life where you've hit rock bottom(and if you are still addicted you have not hit it yet) I know that sounds harsh, but its true, until you WANT to quit(and i mean REALLY want) you wont be able to. My bestfriends mom was addicted to Heroin from the time she was 16 till she was 35, she was in jail 2 times and in rehab 4. But she finally hit rock bottom, and when she did she realized how much she had hurt her 3 children, and her family. There is no "BEST" way, its all about finding YOUR way. Good Luck!

You are not a professional. You should advise your friend to go to a detox clinic. If he or she has the financial means, or health insurance there are excellent detox facilities. Been there, done that. I'm cured for many years already.

Well I had to stop and quit cold turkey. the key to stopping is that the addict wants to stop. If they are not serious about stopping any advice or anything you do will be useless.
