The best way to break an awkward silence is to start talking about something you know you have in common or something funny! Sharing a joke, funny story or just laughing usually relaxes people as they start to feel more comfortable around you!! Chances are if you are feeling the awkwardness of the situation so is the other person/s, so break it! The last thing you want is to be sitting there trying to think of a way to make converation when you could be having a good laugh!

It depends, did someone say something stupid or is there just nothing to say? A smile usually breaks the silence. It is also more attractive to have a sense of mystery. People who talk too much always feel like they have to fill the silence. With no silence, there is no room for meaningful conversation cause theres no time to absorb what the other person just said. You can also say something stupid on purpose:-)

ask why we have awkward silences or make an observation about why it happens in large groups. Then smile. that way the awkward silence goes away, and you have something to talk about.

Silence need not be awkward. If it is then smile. If you are still feeling odd then say something.

Smiling makes things more awkward. In my experience, the best way to approach the situation is to ask the person a question about them...Like if they've seen a movie and what they thought of it. Eventually, you'll have found a topic common to both of you.
