It's powder coated. Back in the 90's, NASCAR banned chrome (as has been mentioned above) for a variety of safety issues including hidden cracks. Most frequent was the fact that the polished surface created less friction against the lug nut, resulting in the same being lost. At speeds pushing 200mph....this could obviously be a problem.
If anyone cares to think back that far... you may recall the the Busch #99 had a similar wheel on it in the one race that it was driven by Darrel Waltrip...and it was Dodge powered.

The wheels they are currently running aren't really chrome, it's a chrome paint.
Chrome plating was banned because the plating would hide cracks in the wheels.

as far as i can tell the chrome wheels have been improved and NASCAR has found them to be as safe as the painted wheels and they look a whole lot cooler.

I think it is only the Toyotas also. First the chrome wheels then the CHEATING. I think they will do anything to draw attention to themselves.

I think they're cool. It reminds me of running mag rims back in the day.
At least they're not spinners! Then again, maybe GM will launch Cadillac will into the Cup Series. LOL

Are they really chrome, or are they a polished aluminum alloy? The alloy would be strong and light, but a true chroming process uses enough heat that it weakens most metals.

To keep the A.D.D. fans doing something while the race is going on, zeroing on the bling bling. As for the safety, heck its 2007 no one cares about safety, anything goes, right Toyoyta?
