I'm planning what to do with my tax return that will have the most impact. Should I get granite counters for my kitchen, redo the powder room (update it) or add much-needed lighting throughout the house. Ideas welcome. Spending about $5K.

Thanks.

I am getting sile stone countertops installed this summer. It has the look of granite, but it is maintance free and less expensive. It also has antibacterial substances in it and the color is throughout. Sold at Home Depot not Lowes. You could get the counter tops and do the lighting within your budget. You could even do a little in the powder room! Start with the counter top. It will add so much!!

Unless your kitchen is tiny, $5K won't get you granite tops. The average kitchen requires at least $10K to get granite tops. However, for about $1500, you could probably get new laminate tops.

However, $5K should easily do a powder room and a bunch of lighting. Bathroom updates are considered a good investment (in terms of resale value).

You can't go wrong updating your kitchen or bath. You will always get your money back and then some. We just purchased "granite laminate" through Home Depot. Huge savings compared to "real" granite. Honestly, no one knows the difference. Just a suggestion. Wilsonarte Laminate.com is the wholesaler that our Home Depot uses. Check out their website, you can order free samples and catalogs.

more lighting!!! granite counters are nice, until something stains them, then its a pain to get it pretty again!! Are you planning to live there for awhile??? If so go with the granite. I would also consider redoing the closets with covered wire shelves etc if you are staying there.

Lighting...Granite is on its way out and a powder room isn't a major expense (it's a minor one 1,000+-)
good luck
